About us
Tablehurst is a 500-acre mixed biodynamic/organic farm in Forest Row, East Sussex, with mob grazing Sussex horned cattle, Jersey dairy herd, arable, pasture, ponds, woodland, and footpaths on Wealden AONB. It includes a vegetable/fruit garden, polytunnels, farm buildings, bakery, pie kitchen, farm shop, café, and farmer accommodation. The farm produce, beef, lamb, pork, poultry, local wild venison, raw dairy, pastries, fruit and vegetables, is mainly sold through the on-site farm shop.
We have consistently won prestigious awards, the latest ones being BBC Food and Farming Award for Food Producer of the Year 2022, and Sussex Food and Drinks Awards 2021 Sussex Butcher of the Year. Our Pie Kitchen won a Soil Association food award for our delicious Steak and Kidney Pie, made with our own produce.
Our farm is committed to biodynamics as its core farming philosophy, and to community engagement as a central pillar of our work.
We are recruiting a farmer to manage the farm’s dairy herd in line with biodynamic and organic standards, and to ensure the wellbeing and health of the cattle. The candidate must be willing and able to work as part of the team, or independently, in other areas of livestock farming.
Tasks
-
Milking and caring for our 15-cow “calf at foot” dairy herd on a daily basis according to organic and biodynamic standards.

Help out at other enterprises including beef, sheep, pig and poultry; silage and hay making and other farming tasks.

Record keeping including registering births, deaths and other required information using the farm’s logging system.

Monitor and manage animal health in line with the farm’s health management plan.

Carry out daily checks of the animals, ensuring all issues are identified and dealt with promptly, and where necessary, escalated to the Farm Manager.

Operate farm machinery in line with safe systems of work.

Help with general maintenance of farm machinery, including repairs and servicing of farm vehicles and other machinery, and proactively identify repairs that are needed.

Undertake other reasonable duties as required from time to time to support other farm team activities and as requested by the Farm Manager.
Seasonal tasks
The successful candidate will also work as part of the farm team in the following:

Maintain fencing, including both static and electric fencing to required standards of safety and livestock control.

Spread compost on fields in line with farm’s field management plans.

Spray biodynamic preparations in line with farm’s schedules.

Provide bedding and feed to livestock during wintertime.
General
All work is to be carried out in line with the farm’s health and safety requirements, and ensuring adherence to organic and biodynamic standards.
Location
The role is based at Tablehurst Farm and land in the vicinity of the farm.
Hours
Hours are dictated by the seasons and depends on the needs of the farm and the livestock. Normal working hours are 42.5 hours over 5 days a week. Weekend working is required.

Skills required
Essential:

Farming experience with livestock, preferably dairy herds

Full UK driving licence

Good record keeping ability, including use of IT systems and apps

Understanding of the importance of regenerative, organic farming
Desirable:

Tractor driving experience (training can be provided)

Experience of repairing and servicing farm machinery

Understanding of organic and biodynamic approaches to farming

Pie Kitchen Chef / Assistant Chef
Tablehurst Farm runs a thriving pie kitchen which bakes award winning pies, sausage rolls, quiches and cakes etc. These products are then sold in our farm shop and cafe. Much of the ingredients are produced on the farm so this is a great opportunity to work in a “field to fork” environment on a full-time basis (42.5 hours per week Tuesday – Saturday). Full time working hours to be 8am to 5.30pm with 1 hour (unpaid) for lunch. ​
At Tablehurst Farm is a care home where three adults with learning disabilities live and take part in various work on the farm. One of the care home residents currently helps with basic food preparation in the pie kitchen. The successful candidate must be willing to work with him once or twice a week, and undertake the relevant online training such as understanding learning disability and autism.

The ideal candidate will:

Prepare, bake and deliver to the shop and cafe pies, cakes and other goods as per the quantities and recipes instructed by the Pie Kitchen Manager.

Keep a high level of cleanliness and hygiene, both personally and in the pie kitchen.

Demonstrate exceptional timekeeping and reliability.
-
Comply with food handling and hygiene standards.
-
Comply with health and safety regulations.
-
Work with a care home resident and undertake online training assigned by the Care Home Manager.

Work effectively in a team and collaboratively with all other Tablehurst staff and volunteers.
-
Have a genuine interest in how our animals are reared and in how we farm.

Desired Experience:
-
Experience in cooking (working with pastry would be an advantage but not a pre-requisite) is a must for the Pie Kitchen Chef position.

For the role of Assistant Chef, we would be willing to develop a candidate who is a fast learner and passionate about cooking.
